Title: Comparing Silat to Wing Chun?
Post by: Hammock Rider on 07/04/2011 22:19
Hello Everyone,
I was wondering if any style of silat uses a wooden dummy as is used in Wing Chun? Also does Silat contain anything like the Wing Chun chi sau?  These things have attracted me to Wing Chun and I was wondering if they exist in any style of Silat as well.
Thanks.

Hello Hammock,
Did you start going to the Silat class you mentioned a while back ?
To be honest with you, I don't know if Indonesian Silat systems formally use a Mook Jong (Wooden Dummy) as part of their practice. I know a Malaysian Silat System called Gayang Lima (G5) utilizes their version of Wooden Dummy.

I've also seen some Silat practitioners as individuals incorporating the wooden dummy to practice their techniques.  I think the wooden dummy was originally used to substitute a training partner for practicing striking and blocking ?
When you say similar to Chi Sau, you mean to develop sensitivies and reflex ? Many silat systems have their own drills and training to develop sensitivities and reflex.
Regards,

Hello godam,
Sensitivity and reflex is exactly what I was getting at. I would like to improve those attributes in myself. I have seen some video clips of silat practitioners and some seem to flow around their opponent, which is also impressive. Thanks for your response.

I haven't attended a class yet because my doc says to give my knee a few moew weeks to heal. But I am looking forward to it.

About the similarity Chi sau in silat, we can see this methode in Cikalong style. I ever see a picture that a teacher in Cikalong use the technique that has a kind of chi sau from master Yip Man. Maybe , masters from Cikalong can explain it.
