Selamat Bram;

(For now I'll stick to Bram). At first I thought you might be English by your name, but as I read other posts here that didn't quite seem right. Thank you for clearing that up.

I am happy to hear about your push for organic farming. That seems like it might be an up and coming thing if you can prove it's value. Is Ngawi on Java, near to Jakarta?

I am considering going back next year if I can raise the funds to do it. I'd like to see more systems and perhaps get an introduction to one or two of the systems that I have read about on sahabatsilat.org. Cingkrik Goning for instance. I also have an interest in Jokotole and could certainly use more Pamur training.

What is your system like? If you can easily describe such a thing... perhaps you've already don so elsewhere and I could read about it there.

MAP is one of the forums that I've decided to avoid. There is just too much crap to shovel through to find a horse on that forum....

Hormat saya,
Sean

Sean,

Ngawi is the west part of east Jawa, between Solo and Madiun. Madiun is where all the Setia Hati schools originate.

The silat I study is called PGB Bangau Putih, or White Crane Silat and we have cabangs in the USA too. It is a Chinese Indonesian system and it is very wide and deep. I only know a very little bit of it even though I have been studying for over 20 years now. There are vids and websites on the internet about my school, which is based in Bogor. Apart from being Chinese, Cimande elders are also our elders.

Salam hangat,
Bram

Selamat All;

Just wanted to take a moment to introduce myself. It is likely that I will mostly be a lurker because my life is hectic to say the least...

I am glad to see the Sahabatsilat.com site. I started a similar project many years ago called silatnow! I started it as a webzine for the purposes of exposing the west to more pencak silat rather than silat, and give a perspective beyond the pencak silat Serak found in the U.S.

Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, silatnow! never really got off the ground, there just wasn't enough community interest for such a resource and my personal time just wasn't warranted. Too many takers and not enough givers... I hope that those at sahabat silat will have the energy to finish the race.

Additionally, I had tried to start an organization similar to aopsa but again, no community interest was shown. Maybe I need to shower more often... In any case, Nick, a friend of mine has taken his energy and applied it to that goal and I am thankful for that. Those at sahabatsilat.com also seem to be doing the same thing in a broader way. That's great!

It has long been a frustration of mine that so few seem to have interest in the totality of pencak silat and I am happy to see some of my earlier efforts being expanded and or followed by others, and even more importantly, having some success at doing so.

It is my hope that this will be a place of sharing different ideas and growth rather than what is the norm for many of the forums in existence. I've virtually stopped trying to participate in other forums outside of my own sites, simply because of the attitudes of the participants.

Hormat saya,
Sean

Selamat Bram;

I am familiar with PGB Bangau Putih. From what I know of it that is a large system.

BTW, thank you very much for the invitation to stay with you. (I don't remember if I've directly addressed that.) If the opportunity arises I would be happy to.

Terima kasih for giving me the "scoop" on what you do and where you live.

Bergabung is the active of the verb gabung which means to join ... but in this context "to meet" is probably more appropriate.

Having said that, selamat bergabung Sean ... I was one of those skeptical about your site when I first saw it ... although I wasn't obnoxious about it  ;D. Sorry about that ... but you know how it is about bonafides etc (although in a sense I've done a similar thing ... and I'm ex military to boot ... hehe :)p ).

Welcome aboard mate,

Krisno

Selamat;

Skepticism is normal. In most cases, that is how I view the majority of players that I meet. I have seen too many teaching Kali and calling it silat. Granted there are forms of Kali that are nearly indistinguishable from silat, but that is not true of all kali/arnis/escrima for sure.

In my case however, I tend to extend the hand of friendship hoping for the best and waiting to see what becomes of it.

Terima kasih for the welcome Krisno.

Heya Sean
I must apologise for not having the time up til this point to greet and welcome you to the site.
I have seen your website, and watched the video and i must say i found it to be a very nice and informative video, and i personally admire your style. Added to this you had received very good reviews from Nick prior to joining the site. Without a doubt if i was in america i would have loved to have trained under you for sometime to get a feel for your system.
I hope that your knowledge in it continues to expand and that mankind as a whole benefit from it.

Hello,

I was curious if anyone here had contact information for the White Crane Silat gorups in Texas, since the style had been mentioned in this thread.

To  SilatJunkie:

I thought the Silat Now  e-zine project was a worthy effort and I appreciated it's quality.....unfortunately ( as in my case) I think potential contributors just have/ had too much going on in life to take the time to contribute.....and its hard to keep that going without contributors. The few"issues" that were generated were very nice though.

I recently had time to read vol 1 of your book....very enjoyable. Hoping to read vol 2 on my upcoming vacation to Florida ( Pan handle ) . I am always interested in how one organizes information and  the process by how they pick and choose what to emphasize when developing a single stream lined program influenced by and composed of materials from a number of sources.

The students in my area love your t shirts BTW ....they appeal to our "Texan " sense of humor , of that there is little doubt ; )

With Respect

Doc

Selamat Doc;

Thanks for the comments about the SilatNow! ezine. When it was first discussed there were many who said they would contribute to a community webzine but few who actually did. Occasionally, I still get articles for it but some of them just can't be used because they are nothing more than attacks on other styles.

In any case, it seems like there are few who understand or at least who want to participate in any sort of silat community other than their own. I had hoped it would be a resource for people who wanted to learn about pencak silat. A gathering place where those already in the know could express ideas and information about their own systems in an apolitical environment. It started off good but fizzled quickly. Maybe someday it will get a spark and take off again but right now, with no real input from the outside world, I just can't warrant the time and energy involved with maintaining it and trying to get people to contribute to it.

One of my favorite pieces which was fairly easy to do was found in the original launch of the webzine and was known as "What would you do?" That always got interesting comments and produced a little dialogue within the community. I'd love to go back to that and expand that idea sometime.

RE Vol. 1
Thanks for the Kudos on Vol. 1. There are certainly things that could be improved and perhaps someday I will get a chance to do so. For example, the image quality is not where I'd like it, amongst other things. In Vol. 2 that is remedied for the most part and people in general have told me that they really enjoyed Vol. 2 more and that it was an improvement over Vol.1 so I'd be interested in hearing your comments.

RE Shirts
I'm glad you guys like the shirts! I decided that there are just far too many "classic" sayings surrounding the martial arts that I wanted to document them and in the process maybe get pencak silat noticed a bit more by the general public. I have many more ideas for shirts to be created but making the time to do so just hasn't been a priority. I wear them a bit myself and quite a few people have come to at least hear about pencak silat as a result, even when I'm at a grocery store or something the clerks will ask about a shirt sometimes.

Hopefully they will start to appeal to a wider group of pesilat and they will gain even more interest in pencak silat.

Respect,
Sean

Good Morning from East Jawa, Sean

I notice that you mention this opinion several times, in your sit also, and I feel there is a tinge of annoyance there. Does it bother you that there are teachers of X and Y martial art that claim they are teaching silat? How do you define silat? What martial art can be called silat and what can't in your opinion?

I am also interested in your personal formulation of Christian kebatinan: how do you translate "offer the other cheek" in silat?  Have you read about the formulation of trhe Cikalong style where the founder was a follower of Sufi thought and did not want to hurt his opponent so developed his "soft style"... waht do you think of that? Does your style show Christian influence right down to the jurus and fighting strategies like Cikalong is Sufi?

Salam hangat dan hormat,
Bram
