Minangkabau Silat in Malaysia
« on: 24/07/2007 13:30 »
Assalamua'laikum and peace to all,

Yes, i'm doing this to persuade sahabatsilat.com members to come to Malaysia  ;D

Minangkabau silat can be found in most parts of Peninsula Malaysia. I'm, however not familiar with the silat status quo in Sabah and Sarawak, therefore if there are pesilat from those two Malaysian states here, please contribute.

The popular styles of Minangkabau silat in Peninsula Malaysia include;

Silat Randai Minang
Pancaindera Silat Lintau
Silat Gelut Lintau
Silat Pagar Ruyung
Silat Penjurit Kepetangan
Silat Peninjau Sutan Maakat
Silat Sekebun
Silat Terlak 4
Silat Sendeng 2 Beradik

Most can be found in the states of Negeri Sembilan and Pahang.

Peace

Assalamua'laikum and peace to all,

I'm sorry but i think i don't have the authority nor the experience to shed the light on the differences between the various Minang style silat in Malaysia.

The ones that i have seen in action are only

Silat Randai Minang, Silat Pagar Ruyung, Silat Terlak 4 and Silat Pauh.

Silat Randai Minang can be found in the state of Selangor, in the district of Petaling Jaya. The inheritor and Guru Utama came years ago from Kampung Bayu Maninjau in West Sumatra. The legend states that the Randai in this silat originated when the villagers wanted to kill a 'harimau-jadian' or were-tiger. The villagers trapped the were-tiger inside the Randai circle and with combinations of silat and zikir, defeated the were-tiger. Wallahua'lam

Silat Pagar Ruyung was brought by a Minang master to the state of Terengganu, east coast of Peninsula Malaysia. The style later was changed to suit the environment of Terengganu. This silat is known for its 'gunting' or the use of legs to trap the opponents body parts in a powerful scissor-kick action. Also this silat has a saying, 'sejengkal punggung dari tanah' to explain its low-to-earth stance and fighting principle.

Silat Terlak 4 on the other hand was brought by a Minang master to the neighboring state of Kelantan, north of Terengganu. This style combines the powerful linear fighting of Terlak/Stralak with the Tapak 4 structure.

Peace

Salam all

mashaAllah Amir, very nice description, thank you for sharing.
I have heard that the minangkabau style of silat in Malaysia is most predominantly found in negeri sembilan. I know people from there whose family style is minangkabau. It is a really beautiful martial art mashaAllah.
