Hi,

Mang ipin is in England at the moment, let me know if you want his details, I can email them to you.  8)

cheers, Mo

Mang Ipin, I think is not in the UK anymore, but you should ask Irfan who also is a sahabat... Irfan is a very good friend / family with Mang Ipin and when Mang Ipin is in the UK he always is in contact with Irfan and his Dad.

There are several silat trainers in London, there is Ariffin (Seni silat Melayu), there is Perisai Diri, there is the Harimau Bordes, Steve Benitez and also Pukulan Cimande Pusaka. Check them out and decide which one you conect to better.

Salam hangat,
Bram

Thanks for the info, Moneef...

I would like to see him for old times sakes so I PMed you asking for his numbers.

Also there is a gem of a teacher here that I met today. His name is Pak Jerry Tan and he is 58 years old. He taught Steve Benitez and Abdurrahman (Nick) when they were young lads for many many years ... 12 or more I think he said.

If I were to stay here longer I would definitely train with him. His stuff is kuntao, also called Mantis Kungfu ... he is from Medan. A small, very humble man.

I met him at 11 a.m and we talked untill 5 p.m, watching his students do latihan in his flat. He really knows his stuff ... and the London silat world. Together with pak Aidinal Alrasyid I would say that they are the silat elders in this town.

Salam hangat,
Bram

Hey Bram,

Wow, you actually bumped into Gerry Tann? What a small world!

I used to train with Gerry back in the day when he had a class in Chalk Farm, in an old church hall.

Did you seek him out, or was it serendipity?

Cheers,
Martin

Hi Martin,

I bought a book called 'Esoteric Warriors' and in it was an article about a younger Steve, and it mentioned that one of his first teachers was Gerry Tan. A few days later I met two guys who were talking about silat and healing ... and they said they were students of Gerry Tan ... the name ringed a bell so I asked them for a contact number, rang him up and the next day I was at Tufnell Park tube meeting his student who then took me to his flat.

He talked alot about his life and also about Steve. He is very happy for Steve with all his success now, and I felt that he missed him and would really like to see him. Is Steve ever in the country now? I would like to interview him too, but my mobile was stolen back in Yogya and I lost all my contacts. If there is a time between today and the end of the month that Steve would be free for an hour's interview, I would be gratefull.

Also I should drop in to say Hi to Larni, Johnny, Alvin, Angel, Hardcore and yerself .... what would be a good time? Wednesday evening?

Warm regards,
Bram

Hi Bram,

The guys here are cool. Everyone is very busy, so people are in and out of EWS at all times, so hard to say who and when will be around.  It's a bit of a mad house at the moment!

Also, Parewa, two of my close friends, Mubarik and Reza were here today, and they tell me they know you well.  They speak very highly of you, and I take their word very seriously, so that's high praise from them indeed!  They really liked you, and told me dozens of times how well you treated them recently on their trip to Indonesia.

You guys might also be able to help me with some research.  Who is the current best Indonesian actor and actress over there?  The people that the Indonesians would most like to see in a film.  As part of this film is to promote the silat worldwide and also show Indonesia in all it's beauty, it would be interesting to see if there are any possibilities of having some of these people involved.

Additionally, the film aims to bring the beauty and majesty of silat to the mainstream audience in earnest, and show the world that there is more to Indonesia than what they are used to seeing on CNN.

Cheers,
Martin

There are alot of silat players in Indonesia, but many actors use taekwondo and karate instead of silat for silat films. Some use wires and stuntmen. Might be an idea to use athletes instead of actors. A good silat player, by definition, must also be an actor ... because of the olah-rasa. This is why in my old Theatre school, silat was a big portion of the training.

When will yo be all in Indonesia? Where will you be based? Do come around and and visit my village if you have time ... there is space for around 200 people to sleep (on the floor hehehe)...but there are 4 spare bedrooms in my ancestral house and a huge kebun (forest garden) around it.

I hope to drop in to Hendon some time in the week next week so I will see who I will see. My son who is very interested in silat has chronic fatugue syndrome ... you guys ever dealt with this? It is such a bitch of a disease, I can only teach him (15 y/o) breathing now.

Salam hangat,
Bram

To add to the names of silat teachers in London, there is Simon Das and Abdurrahman Yunani, both contactable through the St Anne's Mosque at Seven Sisters. Both good players with experience.

Hi Martin,
Thanks for your compliment.... I'm flattered... [kupu2] [asik]
Actually, we just don't want "dua bule gila silat, nyasar di Jakarta..."  [lucu]

Reza and Mubarik speak highly about your East West Studio as well. We also very proud that you guys are working on an Hollywood movie that will introduce pencak silat to the world..... [top] Please send our 'salam hangat' to Steven Benitez....

With regards to the Indonesia actor/actress, I have the same opinion with Mas Bram that it's very difficult to find actor/actress who also silat player. If I may have to suggest, you can recruit the real silat players such as pencak silat athletes. So, the actor would become somebody like Jet Lee or Tony Jaa.... Indonesian love to see new idols..... and we, silat enthusiasts, badly need one.... :-\

One name that I would suggest is Eko Wahyudi, the former World Champion of Pencak Silat, and member of Indonesian Pencak Silat performance team. Despite he's not an actor, Mas Bram can send him to his theater (a very famous theater group in Indonesia) for a short training.....

But if you want to know the Indonesians would most like to see in a film, for actress, I vote for Dian Satrowardoyo but I believe she doesn't have martial arts backgorund. Another actress that I would suggest is Sherina Munaf, she is a talented singer and good actress, and she is a wushu player.....

For actors, I suggest 3 names: Anjasmara, Surya Saputra and Nicholas Saputra (both are not related despite same last name). Among these three, as far that I know, only Surya Saputra has martial arts background as he's a wushu player.

In the past, the late Dicky Zulkarnain was a silat player, but nowadays it's really hard to find Indonesian movie stars who do silat. There are few such as Pak Bolot (a comedian, is a real silat master) and last not but least, a dangdut music legend, Rhoma Irama..... 8)

Salam hangat.....

May I suggest Prisia Nasution, a professional model and national TV presenter.

A bona fide Silat athlete (Perisai Diri  [top]). My recollection, she once was a member of Pelatnas (National training center) of Silat for the SEA Games and compete in (or won  ?) the national championship.

A truly gifted  'maniac' of silat a beautiful icon indeed.

Google the name and find several profiles on her. Just don't get the hopes too high though, she just got married... :w

Well there are many theatre hands in Bengkel Teater and most do silat. So it might be an option. Benny Rahardja from PGB has done acting and films and his silat is very high level too. Panglipur is a whole school that was originally designed for performance so you would find many silat actors there, including the elder lady who is the grand master. If they have good silat, making them good actors shopuld not be difficult at all, after all like Marlon Brando once said, acting is responding. Same as silat.

Salam hangat,
Bram.
