I have also posted this message on martial arts planet, i hope it was o.k to post here too.

Im new to this forum, u can call me Vyasa, i would like to give a warm greeting to everyone who reads this with the greatest of respect.

I was wondering if any one knows of any good bonafide silat teacher around london, that teachs the all rounded physical fighting aspect of silat as well as or more importantly the inner knowledge associated with silat/yoga form the indian/sufi mystics in helping one understand oneself better, opening ones energy centers(charkras), retaining energy vie breath/movement/meditation and reach higher spiritual understand of oneself and there environment.

If any ones knows what i mean could you give me a name/contact number vie email or on here, as i understand most like to keep low profiles, so may not like any publicity regarding there names

thank you for any help

Peace

Hi Vyasa,

If you come to Steve Benitez's gym in London www.eastweststudios.com , then expect very hard physical training, and top quality martial arts.  We don't teach Kundilini, so if this is what your after, I suggest you look elsewhere.

Feel free to pop down for a chat if you have time.

Cheers,
Martin

if a teachers has further knowledge and im accepted from him to understand such things it be better for me long term. im careful about where i put my step

I have a passion for such interesting things so asked if he knew, did not mean to offend.

Hi Vyasa,

You asked specifically about Kundilini, and that is what I replied about.  There are much deeper aspects to our system that just physical training, but we start with the basics and work our way up.  If you want to explore kundilini, why not search out a dedicated school?  This won't be taught at any silat school that I am aware of... Good luck in your search.

Martin

Isn't Kundalini chinese or are you refering to the Indonesian equivalent. One teacher would mean going for a Chinese teacher I guess...

Kundalini is an Indian Yogic concept, often visualised or referred to metaphorically as a serpent wrapped around the base of the spine!

I'm not sure that it is taught as a part of any silat per se.

If it is, perhaps silat with a more Hindu influence from Bali might be where you will find it...or at least similar?

Otherwise you could maybe view some silat concepts as similar but using different framework or terminology.

Certainly within yoga awakening the kundalini or 'serpent power' is usualy considered to be very advanced and potentialy dangerous.

Vyasa, perhaps you will need two teachers one being a kundalini yoga guru. However, being a (now ex!) yoga practitioner, I am of the opinion that silat and yoga compliment each other very well.

Regards,
I think some Silat styles, teaches some similar concept as Yoga.
They use poses and breathing method to develop inner power.
IMHO, if you decide to pursue two teachers (one silat and one yoga guru) and learn at the same time that the two styles are compatible and enforces each other.
Otherwise it will take you longer to develop.
Kinda like learning 2 foreign language at once. Is it better to learn one first before learning the 2nd one ? It's really up to the individual.
I can tell you trying to learn English and French at the same time was extremely difficult for me :)
Just my two cents.
Regards,

Gajah

Yes. This is why I suggested viewing them as similar but expressed differently.

Also, I think doing yoga as a complimentary training to silat(or any MA) is an excellent idea. Learning to control breath whilst moving through postures....hmm maybe the languages aren't so different. Italian and Spanish maybe, rather than English and French.

However, I think that studying kundalini yoga and silat might be too much and pehaps cause problems. Certain kundalini techniques can effect a persons pyschology as well as the body. I would suggest something subtle and gentler such as hatha yoga with some basic pranayama.

I originally, took up yoga as an attempt to gain greater flexibility. Even with training four two hour sessions a week plus practice, in a previous MA I just couldn't achieve the flexibility I wanted. LOL two years of yoga didn't make a great deal of difference.

I suppose I'm just one of those genetically chunky & inflexible white guys ::) All of my MA teachers have been bewildered at my inflexibility :'(. I've just had to adapt :)

Anyway, I'm waffling! My point being, studying yoga will give you an indepth understanding of breath and an incredible awareness of your own body. :)

I think some Silat styles, teaches some similar concept as Yoga.
They use poses and breathing method to develop inner power.

The inner power raining in silat is pretty common and is referred to as tenaga dalam and some might call it ilmu kebatinan (though more relating to magic etc. if you ask me) that differs from school to school.

When training the 'right' way you unknowingly already start to enhance your tenaga dalam. When you progress you may start more specific inner power training by means of meditating, breathing techniques and just by doing the langkah in a specific manner.

I think it would be best if you ask the silat guru if if they incorporate tenaga dalam training.

Vyasa did you get your information about this school from this link, I think you will find there are lots of mistakes in the text in terms of accurate information

http://www.bezoarmustikapearls.com/indotalisman/silatcimande.html

P.s I dont think its realistic to expect someone to pass the inner teachings to you from day one. Maybe you should join a class to learn the Silat and also join a class to study Pranayama, Qi gong, nai gong, kundilini yoga etc

I don't trust that website! The Cimande info is badly put together from cut-and-paste without recognizing the source, very bad adab! Also, the site sells new keris as old ones. Beware!

Mang Ipin, I think is not in the UK anymore, but you should ask Irfan who also is a sahabat... Irfan is a very good friend / family with Mang Ipin and when Mang Ipin is in the UK he always is in contact with Irfan and his Dad.

There are several silat trainers in London, there is Ariffin (Seni silat Melayu), there is Perisai Diri, there is the Harimau Bordes, Steve Benitez and also Pukulan Cimande Pusaka. Check them out and decide which one you conect to better.

Salam hangat,
