Salam Everyone...
Yes, I put an Indonesian idiom in the subject that means "empty can sounds louder". I could not restrain my fingers not to dance and "bersilat" in my keyboard keys after read some postings about "American vs Indonesian Pesilat".
I will try not to judge generally, but rather speak from my experience while I was still in USA. So to speak, I have been in both world. I knew personally some of true Pendekars, who were very humble, low profile and shown a very great personality. On the other hand, I also (unfortunately or fortunately?) knew some "wannabe" Pendekars. The good thing was, they made me smile, and say, "Oke deeee...."
Most people probably forget that silat is not just a martial art or a self defense art in respect to fight against someone. I would like to remind myself that silat has 3 aspects:
olah raga (train the body),
olah rasa (train the intuition/feeling/inner power) and
olah karsa (train the mind/higher conciousness/spiritual). The highest level of Pesilat is called a Pendekar, whom hopefully should reach a result of long life journey training the 3 aspects of silat. Also, the training does not stop as soon as someone "receive" a title "Pendekar". The training stop when a pendekar stop breathing.
So, when someone only mastering one aspect of silat, i.e. olah raga ONLY, the "raga" (body) becomes hard and the outcomes are easy for others to see. Since, he/she did not train the other two aspects, so the outcomes of balance training were not shown in his/her daily life. Human being is "made from earth" (tanah). How to hardened earth? By fire. And what represents the fire? Iblis (devil). And if earth is hardened, it becomes fragile and the color is dull and dark, bear the mark of fire. So, what others will see? Arrogant! The same when the Iblis (devil) said "I am BETTER THAN HIM".
The aspect of olah rasa trains the
four nafs', so the outcomes will make the inner body "glow" in light of white yellowish.
The aspect of olah karsa trains the
suksma sejati or
guru sejati or
aku sejati (true self). So, when someone has mastered this training, the outcome will make him/her has "halo" around his/her head.
Of course, the result of olah rasa and olah karsa can't be seen by any physical eyes, but "eye" from someone who has his/her "third eye" activated. But, anybody can feel the outcomes from a highly trained of olah rasa and olah karsa person. This person will be "full of light" around his/her body. And what represents light? Malaikat (angel). So, he/she will have characters of an angel.
So, back to my subject:
For me, it's okay if someone wants to use all mumbo jumbo titles. The title itself does not represent what he/she capable of. One who knows does not need any of those empty titles. A real and true pendekar does not need to advertise him/herself with a huge words "Pendekar so and so" in his/her uniform. He/she does not care, because he/she is not looking to be famous. Because, he/she knows that the opposite of fame is being notorious. Certainly, people can differentiate between real gold and bronze.
I humbly apologize if any of my words offend you unintentionally. Please correct me if I'm wrong. I know, there are a lot of true Pendekars in this forum.
Salam...
