Salamat Pesilatan
i hope i find you all in the best of health, strength and iman.

I was just wondering how famous Cecep A Rahman and Panglipur are in Indonesia and what people's opinion of it is? I have not been able to find too much information but from what i have seen it seems to be a very nice style and very strong, and Cecep Rahman seems to be a wonderful pesilat with sooo much skill.

Here is an example that i have seen:

Panglipur is a respected silat school here and Cecep. A Rahman is a very good pesilat, as you can see in the vid. How would you compare his movement to the deadly Cimande Sanders vids on youtube?

Haha
i dont know
originally i would have prefered sanders' "cimande" because of it's graceful movements, but recently i have been studying them sparing because that is the whole point of silat, seni without beladiri is just useless dancing, and i could go to a disco if i wanted that  ;D (a udhu bilah) ... nah im kidding, but it does seem a little awkward and now i am thinking that i would kinda be more impressed by Panglima... AHEM.. i mean Panglipur  :w  x-))

Salam AbdUllah,

Panglipur is my family along with Maenpo Cikalong in West Java.  Panglipur is a very powerful and beautiful style.  It incorporates elements of all the traditional Sundanese (West Javan) Pencak.
Styles like (Cimande,Serak,Cikalong,Jalak Pinkor,etc...)  The current
head of Panglipur is Ibu Enny in Garut.  She is 90 years old and moves like she is in her 30's.  I haven't had the pleasure of meeting
Kang Acep because when I was staying with Ibu Enny he was in France but I have heard only great things about him.  There are so many great Sundanese masters of Panglipur to choose from.  You should try Pak H. Adang just outside of Bandung, Pak H.Uho(my teacher) along with Kang Erwin and Ibu Betty in Bandung, or of course Ibu Enny and Kang Acep in Garut.  Panglipur, from the outside, looks like a lot of Seni(art) and indeed there is a lot of Seni, but believe me - it gets much deeper as you progress !!  If you have any more questions feel free to ask.

I apologize, in the above post I used the name Kang Acep but I meant Kang Cecep. Kang Acep is my Cikalong brother.

MashaAllah brother sundawarrior
you studied in Garut? that must have been amazing?

And how does cikalong differ from panglipur?
Does panglipur often make animal-like movements (such as the children in the youtube video i gave above)?
I have been looking for video clips of cikalong but thus far i cant find any. Thus far i have only found a video by cecep rahman that i am hoping to buy when i can afford it. http://www.saudara-kaum.fr/product_info.php?cPath=26&products_id=76 have you seen it?

Peace

AbdUllah,

I was only in Garut for two days to visit the inheritor of Panglipur "Ibu Enny."  I stayed at her house and we did
some training and i got to see some incredible demos.
Garut is a beautiful village in the mountain regions outside
of Bandung.  If I am not mistaken this is where Kang Cecep
lives and trains.  I did see some animal movement in Panglipur -
mainly monyet and macan (monkey and tiger) but i didn't have enough time to learn any.  From my experience, Panglipur has some
Cikalong influence.  The fouder of Panglipur "Bapak Abah Aleh" studied under the Sahbandar/Cikalong lineage for a period of time.
So you will see some similarities like the use of nempel and tempel (something like wing chun sticky hands but not the same).  Cikalong is however a very in depth Sundanese system which involves many years of training to develop "rasa" or feeling.  From what I have seen in Panglipur only the old masters who have studied for "many" years have been able to develop this rasa to a higher level like the teachers of Maenpo Cikalong.  Like the teachers I mentioned above.  Panglipur doesn't seem to focus on any one system
(like Cimande,Cikalong) but instead incorporates a little of all Sunda culture.  From my thoughts of Panglipur it seems like once a pesilat finishes the curriculum of Panglipur he then has the knowledge to specialize in whatever his heart leads him to whether it be Cimande, Serak,Cikalong,etc...  Maenpo Cikalong is a separate system with its very unique methods and beautiful history.

From Cak O'ong's book it appears that Panglipur was created to entertain a Sundanes nobleman who was unwell. So it is like a compilation of everything Sundanese, designed to entertain in performance. But because in silat there is no real separration of seni and beladiri (beladiri is seni and the seni is seni beladiri) what is beautiful is also effective.

Cikalong is a different story. There are two great English articles on www.sahabatsilat.org . If I had the opportunity to study a Sundanes silat I would chose Cikalong, just because I have seen very old men throw young men around as if by magic. Cimande is much more forcefull. Read the articles in the site above. Abdullah, Cikalong might just be the Sufi silat you are looking for.

Assalamua'laikum Abdullah,

Kang Cecep A. Rahman will come around march 2008 for 2-3 months in France.
He'll come with the IPSI official team including other great teachers.
They'll perform demonstration in Paris for the "International Pencak Silat Open" (I don't have the exact date yet). Then Kang Cecep will make seminars in deifferent french schools (probably including mine  :))

Salam Mas Bram
Al7amdulIllah i think maybe it is possible you are right, inshaAllah i will check out cikalong. BarakAllah feek for being a caring brother, this quality is rare these days in life, God bless you.

and Gorka my friend,
I was thinking, when our silat group forms back here (even though i will be gone by march but for their benefit) maybe we could discuss Cecep Rahman coming to do a seminar here? Or 2 maybe? That may not be convient or practical, but if he was interested possibly we could try to arrange something? I am very interrested presently in trying to arrange some silat seminars with silat masters, because we have dozens of other types of seminars going off at anyone one time, so we should be able to get some silat seminars too.
Maybe we could organise a silat seminar with yourself over the summer too? :)

Peace

Salam Kang Abdullah,

Your idea to make a seminar with kang Cecep in your school could be great.
On my side, of course, I would love to make a semianr in your school too.
I've got a simple question : "where is you school ?"  ;D

For more details, you can also contact me privatly at :

So has anybody seen this seminar video by Cecep Rahman before?
Does anyone think it would be a good investment? I feel that one can not truely learn silat from a video, but i think that one can get a feeling for or a flavour of it in a limited sense, so would this be a beneficial acquisition?

Peace
