Microcosmic Orbit (time: 30 minutes)
This exercise circulates chi in the direction of the higher energy centers. The
Governing Channel. runs from the Hui-Yin or perineum up the spine over the head
to the third eye, or Ajna. The governing channel is considered male, Yang or hot
energy, sometimes called Kundalini energy. The meridian running along your front
from the perineum to the tip of your tongue is the Female Channel and is
considered Yin, or cold energy. In this exercise, we will be activating the centers
one by one, eventually forming a circuit of the two meridians. The Microcosmic
orbit should be done at least once a day for 14 days in order to effectively
increase the amount of chi you can carry.
Before you start the meditation, familiarize yourself with the location of the energy
centers. The male, or governing centers, are mostly pairings with the female
centers, they just sit a little higher on the spine. Try to remember where they are
so you do not have to break your concentration during meditation. Also, in the
beginning, it is often advised to skip the Gia-Pe (opposite Heart Center) and Ta-
chui (opposite Throat Center) because you will experience a surge at those points
and your body may not be prepared to handle it in the early days.
1. Begin by sitting in a lotus, half-lotus or other comfortable position with palms
turned upward. Relax and calm for 5 to 10 minutes.
Starting with the DanTien center, located 3 inches below the navel, focus on the
center and infuse it with golden light. Now rotate the chakra, first clockwise (to
your right then down) 9 times, and then rotate the chakra counter-clockwise (to
your left then down).
Then inhale and exhale on that chakra 20 times.
2. After that, inhale, bringing the chi from the DanTien center to the Ren2 center (
tip of the genital bone) then exhale on Ren2, seeing it ablaze with golden light.
Now rotate Ren2, first clockwise (to your right then down) 9 times, and then
rotate Ren2 counter-clockwise (to your left then down).
Then inhale and exhale on that chakra 20 times.
3. Inhale, bringing the chi from the Ren2 center to the Hui Yin on Ren2 center
(perineum) then exhale on Ren1, seeing it glow with golden light. Now rotate
Ren1, first clockwise (to your right then down) 9 times, and then rotate Ren2
counter-clockwise (to your left then down).
Then inhale and exhale on Ren1 20 times.
Perform the same procedure on all of the energy centers in the orbit, or circuit:
4. 4. Chang-Chiang, coccyx
5. Ming-Men, kidney and opposite navel
6. Chi-Chung, adrenal and opposite solar plexus chakra
7. Gia-Pe, opposite of Heart Center
8. Ta-chui, opposite of Throat Center
9. Yui-Gen, cranial pump at the base of the brain
10. BaiHui, highest point at crown
11. Ajna, third eye, pituitary gland
At this point in the orbit, some experts advise you to touch the tip of your tongue to the roof of your mouth to prevent a break in the circuit.
12. Hsuan-Chi, throat
13. Heart
14. Solar plexus
15. Dantien, again, closing the circuit.
If you have the opportunity and are comfortable the chi generated the first time through, you may repeat the exercise a second time.
Imagine now the circuit of chi orbiting your body, moving in the same direction you
connected the points, from front, down, and up the back, moving in a kind of
wheel of golden light. Each breath you take powers the wheel. Draw cosmic
energy through your crown and add it to the wheel. Open the soles of your feet
and draw earth energy up to your Hui-Yin where it joins the wheel. The wheel
spins faster and faster, grows more and more powerful until you are ready to
stop. Allow the wheel to slow down and finally stop. Take a few minutes to relax
and ground yourself.
